Chimney Repairs & Leadwork in Halifax

Stone and brick stacks on exposed hillsides take a battering. We renew their flashings, repoint them, and replace worn lead across the roof.

Ridgeway Roofers Halifax repairs chimneys and roof leadwork across Halifax and Calderdale: lead flashings, soakers, valleys and aprons, chimney repointing and flaunching, and chimney pots and cowls. Failed lead at a chimney or valley is one of the most common causes of roof leaks. Call 01422 774307 for a quote.

Stone stacks and slate

Stone chimney stacks rising through slate roofs, like the one pictured, are a Halifax staple. Their lead is dressed into the stonework and over the slates, and when it lifts or the joints open, water runs down inside the stack and shows up as damp on the chimney breast.

Valleys and stepped flashings

Valleys carry water from two slopes at once, so worn lead there leaks fast. Stepped flashings with soakers keep the joint between roof and wall dry. Both are shown below.

A proper look

We inspect the roof around the problem as well as the problem itself, so the repair goes where the water actually gets in.

A straight answer

You'll hear whether it's a repair, a bigger job or nothing to worry about yet, with the reasons, before you decide anything.

A tidy finish

Old slates, tiles, offcuts and packaging are cleared away and the work is talked through with you when it's done.

Questions about chimneys & leadwork

Why is my chimney breast damp?

Usually failed flashing, open pointing on the stack, or rain coming down an uncapped flue. We check all three.

Can lifted lead just be refixed?

If it's only lifted, it can sometimes be re-dressed and secured. Cracked or thinned lead needs replacing.

What is flaunching?

The sloped mortar on top of the stack that holds the pots and sheds water. When it cracks, water gets into the stack.

Do you cap redundant chimneys?

Yes, caps and cowls keep rain and birds out of flues that are no longer used.
